Sherry was born and raised in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. She has always painted in a photorealist style, in watercolour, and the subjects of her work are primarily native and cultivated plants and flowers of British Columbia. Recent paintings, however, have included fauna, such as a hummingbird in one and a pair of turtles in another. Sherry’s work extends beyond mere duplication of the subject matter; her paintings are both incredibly accurate representations of her chosen subjects and most particularly celebrations of light, shadow, shape and colour.
Of her work, Sherry explains, “I think the majority of people relate to my work because the images and subjects are immediately recognizable and need nothing further in the way of explanation. A lot of the work I’m doing now is local natural subject matter that is available for everyone to see, but in fact most people miss seeing in their walks and travels. And that’s what my painting is all about – the beauty and intricacy in nature that surrounds us, but that we often don’t take the time to appreciate. We should – life is fleeting, and in our hectic lives we need the balance and serenity that nature gives us, both by viewing it and by being immersed in it.”
Sherry is a published botanical and children’s book illustrator, a Senior Signature Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and a member of the Botanical Artists of Canada, American Society of Botanical Artists, and International Guild of Realism. She has participated in numerous individual and group exhibitions throughout British Columbia and North America, and has received awards for her work in juried regional, provincial and international exhibitions. Her paintings are held in private collections around the world.
Sherry works from her home, Serendipity Studio, at Eaglecrest in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island.
