Fernande (Fern) Theberge-Draper
Fern discovered her passion for Art later in life. While studying drawing and painting at the University of Sherbrooke, Que. she met Maya Lightbody and Stanley Lake, two accomplished artists and was introduced to hand building with clay. Born in Sherbrooke, Que., Fern has always had an interest in the Arts. After completing her university courses, she studied painting with Seymour Segal, artist-painter of world reputation. Fern’s oil paintings have been displayed throughout the Eastern Townships of Quebec.
Fern moved to Vancouver Island with her husband in the Fall of 2004 and is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, Arrowsmith Chapter, the DeCosmosFind Arts Society and the Oceanside Community Art Council. She was also a member of Les Artistes Peintre du Que., Les Peintres Associes de Granby, Que. and Peintres Unis de Waterloo, Que.
Several years later, she decided to pursue her clay sculpting. In 2003, Fern took extensive courses with Serge Roy and Gregory Schlybeurt. Both Serge and Gregory have sculptures on display around the world including the Quebec Parliament Building and the College of Art of Shandong in China. While working with Serge and Gregory, Fern realized she was able to transform the clay into a flowing moving energy….which allowed her to express her feelings in an unlimited way. Fern then decided to sculpt full time. She does not sketch her subjects before hand but feels where the energy wants to go. Fern’s work shows an exciting movement and flow and her style of finishing each sculpture is unique to Vancouver Island.
